Pillows

Your choice of pillow makes a significant contribution to a restful night’s sleep. In combination with your mattress, your pillow plays a decisive role in defining your sleeping position and whether your spine is correctly supported. It holds your head, supports your cervical spine and prevents your neck and neck muscles from being overstretched. Your pillow and mattress do more work than any other parts of your bed. On average, a pillow supports 4.7 kg night for night (this corresponds to the weight of an adult head), withstands up to 40 head movements and absorbs the warmth and moisture that are released from your head.

For soft mattresses, lower pillows are generally the better choice whereas for hard mattresses, where there is less danger of sinking in, a higher pillow can be used. Those with a sturdy build should choose a higher, more supportive pillow while those with a fine build can opt for a lower, softer pillow.

For people who sleep on their side or back, the “shoulder – neck triangle” should be particularly well supported.

In a supine position, the natural S-form of the cervical spine should be maintained, for a side position, the cervical spine should ideally be perfectly straight without any bends. A flat pillow is recommended for tummy sleepers, although many prefer to sleep without a pillow.

The height of your pillow should correspond to the width of your shoulder and your shoulder should lie on the mattress directly next to the pillow as you sleep.
